ABOUT LESSONS

What Children 6 - 12 Months Will Learn

Generally speaking, children ages 6 months to 1 year learn the ISR Self-Rescue skill of rolling onto their backs to float, rest, and breathe. They learn to maintain this position until help arrives. This usually takes about 6 weeks for them to master. Lessons are 5 days a week for 10 minutes a day. Consistency is key for young children when learning a new skill.

WHAT CHILDREN 1-6 YEARS WILL LEARN

Older, more mobile children will learn the full ISR Self Rescue sequence of swimming until they need air, rotating onto their back to float, breathe and rest, then rolling back over to continue swimming. ISR students are taught to repeat this sequence until they reach safety of the steps or side of the pool. Children ages 1-2 typically require 6 weeks of lessons to master the swim-float-swim sequence. Children ages 3-6 typically require 4-5 weeks of lessons to master the sequence. Lessons are 5 days a week for 10 minutes a day. Consistency is key for young children when learning a new skill.

REFRESHER AND MAINTENANCE LESSONS

Refresher lessons are extremely important in continuing and maintaining your child’s Self-Rescue skills. Children grow and their bodies change. The refresher lessons help them to help them fine tune their self existing skills to meet the demands of their growing bodies. It will allow them to make adjustments to their float and strengthen their swim. ISR recommends refresher lessons every 6 months to a year.

Maintenance can be done weekly, monthly, etc. Maintenance lessons are necessary if your child has had an unexpected fall into the water, will not float or perform the rollback to float, or is showing any hesitation or lack of confidence in the water.
